American Families: Past and Present (Spring 2023)

The notion of what constitutes “family” has evolved over time and place. Families in the United States today are much more diverse than in the past: married couple households are no longer the norm; more couples live together outside of marriage but also “live apart together”; and households span multiple generations. This course takes an intersectional approach to examine contemporary family life, the social and structural changes that have unfolded to shape family life today, and how families are stratified along race, class, and gender lines.
